Redesigning an Urban Thoroughfare
to Instill a Sense of Place

The stretch of 2nd Street NW that brings traffic in and out of Rochester, Minnesota, from the west lacked visual appeal and pedestrian amenities.

Traffic calming measures such as landscaped medians, on-street parking and corner bump-outs were added, while safe multimodal accommodations like crossings, bicycle lanes and bus nodes were also built. A variety of visual elements were also added to create a vibrant, memorable sense of place.

  • Landscaped medians
  • On-street parking
  • Bicycle lanes
  • Bus nodes
  • Limestone benches
  • Ornamental LED lighting
  • Landscaping
  • Water-themed artwork
  • Urban light towers
