Durango on-call engineering services

Challenge

To best support its citizens and position itself for future growth and development, the City of Durango, Colorado, needed to partner with an engineering firm to assist with projects.

Solution

As part of an on-call engineering service contract with the City of Durango, project engineers typically design three to five projects each year, primarily working with the City engineering and parks departments. Designs have included traffic studies, intersection design, street design, parking lot design, utility design, trails, and civil site design for city owned properties.

As part of a recent project, the team provided traffic modeling for reducing a major thoroughfare from four lanes to three. The modeling was built using data gathered from traffic counts at 10 different intersections and included current and future conditions. Based on the modeling, the City redesigned the entire corridor to provide safer streets for all users.

Another project involved the completion of the the Chapman Hill Ski Area Master Plan. Chapman Hill is an outdoor recreation area owned and operated by the City of Durango. The area consists of a ski hill, tubing area and ice skating/in-line skating rink. It is used and enjoyed by area residents during the summer and winter months. The Master Plan identified significant upgrades and enhancements to the area to be phased in over time.
