Rock Island Swing Bridge

Written by Admin | June 14, 2022

Challenge

One of only two remaining historic double-deck swing bridges in Minnesota that carried railroad over roadway faced demolition due to deterioration and neglect. But the City wanted to preserve the bridge as a regional trail feature overlooking the Mississippi River.

Solution

Following a demolition moratorium signed by Minnesota’s governor, the SEH project team designed a 670-foot recreational bridge that incorporated many of the steel components of the original bridge, built in 1894.
