North Main Avenue Extension Project Improves Accessibility and Connectivity

Written by SEH | January 25, 2023

Challenge

North Main Avenue, designated as a Historic District by the State of New Mexico nearly 40 years ago, is home to a series of beautiful 19th and early 20th century two-story brick buildings that have attracted tourists for years. The 1,700 ft. extension project, funded with $2.5 million from the New Mexico State Legislature, needed to improve site amenities, address drainage issues, and enhance connectivity for pedestrians, bicycles, and automobiles.

Solution

The City of Aztec enlisted the help of SEH to develop and complete construction plans for the project. To ensure that the project met the needs and desires of the community, the team gathered comprehensive public input through multiple workshops, resulting in community consensus for the corridor including plans to incorporate a pedestrian plaza with a shade trellis to serve as a public gathering space. In addition, the team coordinated with the New Mexico Department of Transportation and closely collaborated with city staff to incorporate factors such as wetlands and archaeological sites, roundabout design, floodplain agency coordination and mapping, and designing a box culvert for an arroyo crossing.

To address drainage issues, the project included construction of a stormwater detention pond and depression of the median. Rather than draining away from the center of the road to the sidewalks, the roadway drains to the center median. This innovative approach helps with erosion control while also providing irrigation for median plantings.

The corridor was designed to accommodate future mixed-use development and recreational opportunities adjacent to the National Monument. Built to accommodate all types of users, with dedicated drive and bike lanes running the length of the project, North Main Avenue was designed to be fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG). The walking path connects to a larger trail system leading to the Aztec Ruins National Monument.

Two phases of the project have been completed to date, with future project components designed and scheduled for construction.
