The Village of Holmen is one of Wisconsin’s fastest growing communities, evolving from 2,500 residents in 1980 to 11,500 today. This continued growth, particularly from the southern commercial district, was putting a strain on the South Main Street and Gaarder Road intersection, resulting in backups and a higher-than-average crash rate.
The Village partnered with SEH to evaluate alternatives that would replace this four-legged, three-way stop intersection with a single-lane roundabout that improves traffic flow and safety while supporting future development. By starting with a clear purpose and thoughtful stakeholder outreach, SEH anticipated potential challenges and provided practical, constructable alternatives for this complex project.
Flexibility throughout design and construction helped the team incorporate factors such as the environment, effect on the public, construction schedules and future development needs. This big-picture approach, pairing the technical expertise of roundabout design with other engineering disciplines, resulted in a roundabout that provides a safer, more efficient intersection for this growing community.
