The fire station at the Grand Forks Air Force base was 53 years old and showing signs of its age. To better respond to potential structure fires on the base and have quick access to the runways to respond to potential airplane crashes, the old station needed to be replaced.
The project included the design and construction of a 30,343 square-foot, state-of-the-art fire station. The station houses both structure and air rescue fire fighting (ARFF) vehicles, equipment, personnel, an alarm center and supporting areas. The station is positioned where one set of bays opens out to access the structures on the base while bays on the other side open out to a runway for ARFF vehicles.
In replacing the aging facility, the new station features 18 bunkrooms, a television viewing room that seats 18, a game room, a dining room, a kitchen, a fitness area and a laundry room. The fire station is situated on 2.6 acres along the flight line adjacent to the most populous areas of the base. The new facility accommodates several sustainable features such as rainwater harvesting, natural daylighting, water reducing fixtures and energy efficient mechanical and electrical systems.
