The Northern Metal Recycling New Steel Shredder project in Becker, Minnesota – first of its kind in many ways – was honored as one of the top 16 engineering projects in the U.S. at the prestigious 54th Annual Engineering Excellence Awards Virtual Gala on June 17.
It was great to see our SEH team and Northern Metal Recycling be nationally recognized with an ACEC Grand Award for the innovative thought and hard work we put into this amazing project.
The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) hosts "the world's most esteemed celebration of engineering brilliance" each year. This year, the Gala honored 173 of the year's "most stellar engineering achievements while emphasizing the essential role" engineering plays to enhance our lives.
The SEH team collaborated with Northern Metal Recycling to design and construct a state-of-the-art metal shredder facility that includes a ferrous downstream and nonferrous recovery plant.
The new steel shredder is one of the largest shredders in the country – and the only fully enclosed facility of its kind in the U.S. All processing is done within buildings, with all emissions sent through control equipment before discharge.
The shredder can turn full-size vehicles into 3 in. pieces in about 8 seconds. It separates waste from recyclable product using some of the most sophisticated technology and programming available.
