7 Fun Activities Your Company Can Use To Boost Employee Giving

Every October, SEH kicks off our companywide workplace giving campaign supporting hunger relief. But how do you get your organizations’ employees to give back?

It helps to make it a social effort. We encourage our employee-owners to join together in an activity that builds teamwork, promotes collaboration and allows them to interact with their peers. In return, our employees give back.

What makes our giving back program fun and unique as well as successful in capturing donations are the variety of events, games, and challenges our employees come up with. Try one or all eight of these activities as part of your next company giving program and hopefully it will add a boost to your employee giving:

Jelly bean challenge

In this fun game, employees donated to have their co-workers randomly choose from 20 different jelly bean flavors to eat. The kick is, half of the beans are unpleasant flavors like rotten eggs and moldy cheese. The other 10 flavors are tasty. And you can't tell which is which. To opt out and avoid the chance of eating a foul tasting bean, employees could pay double the original amount donated. Some departments pitched in a lot of money to have their supervisor spin the wheel.

Bean bag tournament

Employees participated in a two-person team bean bag tournament. Team entry fees were donated and started at a minimum of $10 per team. Teams could donate more if they wanted. The winner? Well, they got bragging rights.

Bake sale

From homemade caramels to freshly baked buns, cinnamon popcorn to banana bread, and so much more, employees paid to take home a bevy of delectable delights at this event.

Pumpkin carving contest

Each department submitted up to three pumpkins for judging. Throughout the day, employees made monetary donations to their favorite. The department that had the most dollars was deemed the winner.

Plinko

Plinko is the most popular pricing game on The Price is Right. The objective of the SEH version was to finish with the fewest points per team. Employee donations provided each team with Plinko chips to sabotage other teams, but ultimately it came down to skills (or luck) on the Plinko board.

Volunteer

Employees in many of our offices volunteered at their local food organization.

Company match

Employees are more likely to donate if their company offers a donation matching program. According to Double the Donation’s Analysis of Matching Gift Programs, match-funding is the most likely factor to make donors give more. To help further our philosophy of Building a Better World for All of Us®, our company matches dollar-for-dollar employee-owner contributions of $5,000 or less. Employee-owner contributions generating $5,001 or more result in an SEH donation of $10,000.

Wrapping it Up

What makes our giving back program fun and unique as well as successful helping those in need are the employees who generate creative ideas for events, games, and challenges. We encourage our employee-owners to join together in an activity that builds teamwork, promotes collaboration and allows them to interact with their peers. In return, our employees give back.
