Bayfield County Comprehensive Plan
Bayfield County, Wisconsin

Iron River

Agricultural, Natural and Cultural Resources Goals and Policies

1. Provide five important goals related to agricultural, natural or cultural resources as it pertains to your town.

  1. Preservation and restoration of trout stream & lake resources.
  2. Preservation and improvement of historically significant structures (Mitchell and Old Bank Buildings & historical houses in town).
  3. Documentation and display of historically significant events and places.
  4. Enhancement of the landscaping efforts within the Town
  5. Develop an arts & musical performance area and/or building.
  6. Increase and develop ATV, snowmobile, and walking trails within the township.

2. Provide five action steps required to achieve these goals.

  1. Assess the condition of water resource areas in target impact areas where development or changes have potentially impacted #1 above. Also evaluate future land use concerns within the watersheds and make recommendations for long term protection and “spot” corrections. Repair the dam on the Iron River to take water from the bottom of the dam and not the surface. This will prevent “fish kill” due to warm water downstream. Encourage the DNR to re-stock all lakes & streams within the township annually.
  2. Obtain grant funding for historical preservation. Move IR Street Dept. to the West Spider Lake Road site. Town to enhance the façade of the Fire & Ambulance building along USH 2.
  3. Support the IR historical efforts in documentation and make their public display a priority. Improve and repair the Old Town Hall / Museum building for arts & musical performance and display. Expand to connect the library building with the Old Town Hall ? Add a second town historical mural to either the Mitchell building south side or along Marge’s This & That east side.
  4. Develop ATV & walking trails to Moon Lake and then to the south along CTH H to the Pike Lake Chain of Lakes.
  5. Repair / Improve the town boat landings at Busky Bay, Half Moon, and Moon Lakes.
  6. Expand Moon Lake park to add rustic camping sites along the park’s south side at Spider Lake Road. Improve all town parks to enhance their appeal to the public.
  7. Add town display boards at the Wayside Road park & Chamber of Commerce Building. Highlight town lakes & streams, recreational activities, camping, arts & music festivals, ect.. Improve Community Center sign for better visual display, “What’s Going On in Iron River “.

3. Provide three to five key areas that make your town unique as it relates to the natural environment. (Abundance of lakes, coastal area, prime farm land, forest area). Please try to be specific.

  1. Abundance of Lakes and Streams within Iron River. Ninety six lakes are within the town limits. Two important trout rivers start in Iron River, the White & Iron Rivers.
  2. Great Diversity of Landscape – Located at edge of glacial Lake Superior – thus has both aquifer recharge areas and discharge areas. Wide variety of soils types from sand and gravel to clay. Watersheds flow both North directly to Superior and to Lake Superior via the White River to the Bad River. Iron River is located at the top of the watershed both surficially and from a groundwater standpoint.
  3. The Chequamegon National Forest is next door to the township. Abundance of recreational and commercial forest land.
  4. Tri-County Recreational Corridor & North Country Walking Trail both go through the township
  5. USH 2 runs through the township & provides good access to tourist’s and the ability of the town to highlight the towns attractions and draw in visitors.
